Alcoves — the recesses beside a fireplace, a nook in a wall, the gap at the end of a hallway — are rarely square, which is why off-the-shelf units never quite fit.
A fitted unit is measured to the recess and scribed to the walls, so it fills the space completely. It can be shelving, a cupboard, a desk or a seat.
