The approach

I love an intricate challenge.

Curved walls, out-of-square walls, a room that needs to do three jobs at once. Problem solving is the part of the job I enjoy most — and it's where a properly made built-in pays for itself.

Take this jarrah unit: the frame is carried by jarrah strips bent to a gentle bow. There's not a screw or nail in it — every joint is cut to fit and glued, and the four shelves lock into the strips to hold the whole frame square. Dry-assembled in the workshop, sanded back, then oiled — the curves do the holding and give the piece its shape at the same time.
